Welcome to The Torii Gate
The Torii is a traditional Japanese gate commonly found at the entry to a Shinto shrine and marks the entrance to a sacred space. The original Torii Gate was a gift to the City of Oakland in 1969 from the Junior Chamber of Commerce of Fukuoka, Japan, Oakland’s sister city. The gate was rebuilt in 2002 to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the sister city relationship.
2012, the 50th anniversary of Oakland’s relationship with Fukuoka, featured celebrations in both cities and the addition of 10 new lanterns to the Torii Gate Garden.

Hi, Mel, just click the link at the top of the page that says “Map & Directions.”
I am working with a local artist on a book about Oakland Landmarks and we are proud to be including the Torii Gate at Lake Merritt. Copies of the book will be available in December; Pre-orders are being taken at http://www.oaklandlandmarks.com.
In Seward Park, Seattle, we are just beginning the planning process for restoring a torii that was in the park for 50 years. We’d love any help in finding qualified architects or other advice from your experience. Is there someone with your organization whom I can contact?
Mr Talbert,
There is a Japanse traditional joinery woodworker in Seattle named Len Cullum (spelling?) who might be able to assist you. Len Cullum Studio/Shokunin-Do len@shokunin-do.com

Where can I find this Torii gate? I live in the East Bay and would love to pay my respects to this sacred item.
