Torii Gate) at the Gardens at Lake Merritt, Lakeside Park, Oakland CA, http://gardensatlakemerritt.org/map/ on Saturday September 28th, from 10 AM – 4 PM. Lead instructor Peter Thomas Bowyer is an APA Certified Aesthetic Pruner, desigenr and builder of the oakland-Fukuoka gardens in Oakland and Japan, and has be pruning in this park with volunteers for 20 years.

Suggested preparation: Bypass pruning shears and gloves a must. A small pruning saw, a tarp, a rake, a tripod orchard ladder will also improve your experience. Reply confirming attandance appreciated. On-site waiver/release of liability required for participation.

I saw the bit about the drip irrigation. We have a sprinkler system that we’d like to replace with drip irrigation. Should that be taken care of before the sheet mulching? (Seems to make sense.)

Also, will the new surface after the mulch is laid down be higher than the current level of the yard? I know you’re supposed to dig low 3 inches below the level of any concrete (driveway or sidewalk), but beyond that, it sounds likes the levels will be 3-4 inches above the current lawn.

I’m concerned about all of the new grass that’s been planted around the lake and is browning due to lack of proper watering – including the newly planted area adjacent to the new 12th street bridge!

Please tell me how I can help. I live in Rockridge and run the lake Saturday mornings before stopping at the farmer’s market.

I firmy believe that our “jewel” needs to be nourished and protected.
